Surgical technician is responsible for setting up everything required for surgery by sterilizing the instruments involved, testing medical equipment to ensure its functioning properly as well as preparing patient’s for surgery by disinfecting the area and washing incision cites, help surgeons and nurses during surgery by passing them instruments and other sterile supplies.

As a surgical tech, they’ll be on feet, and they may be exposed to unpleasant sights, smells and materials. In addition to helping prepare for and carry out surgeries, technician may also prepare, care for and dispose of specimens taken for lab analysis. With patients, they may apply dressings and help ease them into recovery rooms.

The surgical technologist may also need to take inventory of all of the medical supplies used. This includes taking into account all of the sponges and other disposable materials that were used during the surgery. This job may also require to dispose of human wastes materials that have been extracted during the procedure and to also oversee the team of assistants that will clean up after the procedure.  Medical equipment needs to be tested before and after every surgery. It is the scrub’s responsibility to document and notify the proper staff in regards to any malfunctioning equipment.

Surgical techs must be able to work under great pressure in stressful situations. They work a regular 40-hour week, although they may be on call or work nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
